There's More to Life

What if I told you that there’s more to life?
More than the jobs
More than grad school
Past all the debt, all the attempts to “sell” ourselves, past the lower salaries, the jealousy
And the overall feeling that that adult life sucks
Would you believe me?

I don’t know about you but I'm either someone who is among the youngest of the Millenials or the oldest of the Gen Z. All I know is that my time growing up was pretty different than the ones my friends who are in their late 20s and early 30s have expressed. But also in the same way, my childhood and adolescence years has more in common with the Millenials than with my youngest sister (a younger Gen Z) who is in middle school right now. I've seen the hardships and burnout older Millenials experienced during and in the after math of the Great Recession. Moreover, I've witnessed firsthand, the oldest of Gen Z break into adulthood. As we transition into this new stage of life, there seems to be a shared common dread and utter confusion regarding how to live adult life. Together these two generations will make up almost half of the US working population by 2025.
While growing up, going to college, and graduating, at all turns the general
"vibe" of young adult life that I got was that it was one of a lot of struggle, few rewards, and a delay on everything including your career, dreams, aspirations, and ability to live life.
After graduating, I moved abroad where I really had time to think about if this was all that the first 20 years of adult life had to be like. I was convinced that there had to be more to life than this.
I was determined to escape the cycle or what I call the "fate of young adult life". Many of us have been trapped in this particular cycle of life, thinking it to be “normal” because, well, everyone does it.
The Fate of Y.A.L (Young Adult Life)
The life cycle looks something like this:
Do you remember when you were a kid, having fun in the sun, dreaming what you would be when you grow up? As you grew older, maybe you went and graduated from high school or college, or moved to a new city, or simply just grew older and became this thing people call an “adult” (weird I know).
In the face of rising inflation, crushing student debt, greater difficulty in finding jobs, and a decrease in the number of full time positions, you do what you think all adults do. You twist and turn, update a resume, get another degree, try to get a job, take a lower salary, pay the minimum on your debt all in attempt to stay afloat, seem “valuable”, and hopefully to not be replaced. You might start to climb up the ladder of your industry, and time and time again be disappointed with management, coworkers, your own productivity and so on. You think you paid your dues but really, all that's happened is your dreams and ambitions have been winnowed down to a measly few.
“You twist and turn, update a resume, get another degree, try to get a job, take a lower salary, pay the minimum on your debt all in attempt to stay afloat, seem “valuable."
A Call of Escape
This is insane! I just had to give a moment to mourn that too many of us believe this is the only way to go about life or worse that many of us don’t know that this is what’s in store for us. There must be more to life than this. I personally refuse to believe that we must resign to this status quo of "adult life."
I mean, God gave us the ability to think, to build and create, to connect, and ultimately the ability to choose.....and yet here we are choosing to live lives that dwindle the light that's been put inside us, all because we THINK this is the life we have to live or worse we THINK this is the ONLY way to live.
So I sought out to find new solutions, paths, tactics, birds in the sky, smoke signals, you get my point, all in an attempt to create a new path of young adult life. In my journey I realized, instead of looking at adult life as a time where dreams go unfulfilled and to dream means impracticality, I claim that our dreams can create a new reality. Dreams give us purpose and its dreams that will continue to transform our world for the better.
When I started thinking about my friends and the dreams they held, no longer did I want those desires to stay dreams but to do something to inspire and give them to tools for them to make their dreams a reality.
Then I thought on a larger scale. Here are these two young generations, many with unfulfilled dreams that if given the right tools and motivation, could see those dreams come to be.
Dreams give us purpose and its dreams that will continue to transform our world for the better.
Part of the solution lies within the power of dreams. Another part is being around people who believe and encourage you to see those dreams achieved.
And so, I'm starting a Community for:
All the young adults who feel like there’s something is missing from life.
Those who know we are destined for more and refuse to keep seeing life as a chore.
The young person with a dream on the shelf, who’s ready pick it up and discover oneself.
The ones who want to live their lives not going through the motions but know that the possibilities are as vast as the ocean.
The individuals who to this world want something to give, that lasts longer than we can outlive.
Even if everyone else thinks that there’s nothing we can do, I’m calling out so that I can get to YOU. Because as a young person, I know that somewhere deep inside, you understand me too.
And that is where we begin: It’s time to shift the scales of "fate", it’s time we become
The Counterweights.
Here at The Counterweights, you will be inspired and gain the tools to do what it takes to see your dreams achieved. Together, we will inspire and motivate each other as young adults so that each day we get up, living out our dreams is the result.
As members of this community, we are people willing to push past fear and trail blaze into new frontier. We are breaking this cycle of "life" in which too many people have given up the fight. We are people, who are willing to learn, act, give, and cultivate the traits needed in order to counter the weight.
I’ll take the lead to ignite our fire inside, point to the one that provides, create an environment where your actions and dreams collide, and bring together people from worldwide.
With the aim to revive, the ideal of what we seek most from life is to BE ALIVE.
Here, we don’t care about Fate, because the world will see that:
We are The Counterweights.
